Every June 8th, we recognize World Oceans Day—a time to honor the blue heart of our planet. Covering over 70% of Earth’s surface, our oceans are essential for life. They regulate our climate, produce over half of the oxygen we breathe, and support an incredible web of biodiversity.
But they’re in trouble. Plastic pollution has reached every corner of the ocean, from surface waters to the deepest trenches. The good news? We can make a difference—starting right at home.
Everyday Swaps That Help the Ocean
At Me Mother Earth, we believe small daily choices lead to big environmental change. Here are a few easy, plastic-free swaps that reduce your impact on marine ecosystems:
1. Reusable Sponges & Dish Brushes
Traditional sponges are made of plastic and shed microplastics down the drain. Our biodegradable sponges and bamboo dish brushes are made with natural fibers, and they do the job without polluting our waterways.
2. Natural Cleaning Alternatives
Liquid dish soaps and household cleaners often come in plastic bottles—and many contain harsh chemicals that can disrupt marine life when they enter our water systems. Our solid dish soap bars and other natural cleaning solutions like our liquid castile soap come in plastic-free packaging and are made with gentle, biodegradable ingredients that are safer for aquatic ecosystems.
3. Plastic-Free Self-Care
From bamboo toothbrushes to refillable floss and solid shampoo bars, our bathroom swaps help cut down the billions of plastic items that end up in landfills or the sea every year. In fact, the beauty industry produces over 120 billion units of plastic packaging annually, much of which is not recyclable. Around 1 billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away each year in the U.S. alone, potentially ending up in polluting our oceans for centuries to come. Switching to plastic-free beauty and oral care products is a small change that makes a big difference in fighting ocean pollution.
4. Everyday Swaps That Help the Ocean
Laundry is one of the largest sources of microplastic pollution in the ocean. Each wash releases hundreds of thousands of microfibers from synthetic fabrics like polyester, which can’t be filtered out by wastewater treatment plants. These tiny plastics make their way into rivers, oceans, and even the food chain. Using a microfiber-catching laundry bag or filter, washing with cold water, and choosing natural fiber clothing are simple ways to reduce microfiber pollution. Every load of laundry is an opportunity to protect marine life.
🌊 Why It Matters
Every year, 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean. Sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. Whales wash up with stomachs full of plastic. Microplastics have even been found in the fish, sea salt, and the seaweed we eat.
That’s why making ocean-friendly choices isn't just a trend—it’s a responsibility not only to the health of our planet, but our bodies too.
