Choosing Green Friday Instead — And What That Really Means

Every year, as the calendar flips to late November, the familiar buzz begins: Black Friday deals, fast triggers, "steep" sales, and corporations pushing “buy now or lose out” rhetoric. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement. But here at Me Mother Earth, we ask a different question:

What’s the true cost of all that buying—and what happens after the wrapping comes off?

We believe in shopping that makes sense. We believe in homes that feel calm, not cluttered. We believe in the things we own being used, loved, and valued—not tossed aside. That’s why we do Green Friday—because we want to flip the script.

The Hidden Waste of “More”

It’s not just the gifts themselves. It’s the packaging, the returns, the stuff that sits unused—and eventually ends up in landfill.

Waste spikes during the holidays

  • U.S. households generate about 25% more waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day compared to typical weeks.

  • That increase translates to roughly 1 million extra tons of trash per week entering U.S. landfills during peak holiday weeks.

  • Meanwhile, packaging and containers alone make up around 30% of all household waste in the U.S. — much of which comes from gift wrap, boxes, shipping materials.

Returns: The overlooked waste factor

  • According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. returns totaled $743 billion in merchandise in 2023—which was about 14.5% of sales.

  • For online-only purchases, return rates can hit 16.9% in 2024, meaning nearly 17 out of every 100 items sold are returned.

  • Add to that the fact that many returned items are too damaged or worn to re-sell, and end up in waste streams anyway.

This means that much of the shopping frenzy around Black Friday creates not just one purchase—but a ripple: extra packaging, extra transport, extra return handling, and extra waste all around.

Why We Choose Green Friday

Because we’re not here to feed endless profit cycles or corporate greed.
Because more “stuff” doesn’t create more joy.
Because we believe in gifts that matter—thoughtful, useful, and designed with the entire lifecycle in mind.
Because we want to help you build a home (and habits) that feel intentional, not disposable.

Our guiding values:

  • Intentionality over impulse: A limited-time sale matters, but only if it supports values rather than undermines them.

  • Durability over disposability: Products designed to replace single-use or low-quality items, not add to them or the waste stream.

  • Transparency over hype: We refuse to exploit workers or the planet just to offer flashy discounts.

  • Reuse and renew over throw-away: Our packaging, our materials, our mindset are aligned with zero-waste business practices.

A one-time sale like Green Friday lets us support you and our mission — helping you shop mindfully without sacrificing purpose. And let’s be honest, everything is expensive these days, and sometimes we all just need a good sale to make it possible.

What Mindful Shopping Looks Like in Practice

Here’s how to put this into action:

  • Ask yourself “Will I use this regularly?” before adding to cart.

  • Choose items that are designed to last, not just look good once.

  • Replace one disposable habit with one reusable item you’ll reach for again and again.

Here are some of our favorite bundles aligned with that mindset:

Green Friday isn’t about missing out.
It’s about showing up differently.

Your home. Your habits. Your values.
Your impact.

Let’s shop smarter and from a small business that truly cares. Let’s gift with intention.
Let’s make this season count — for what actually matters.

Mother Earth Thanks You
